Virginia 509 Burley is a heavy producing heirloom variety that originated in the 1930's by crossing Burley 37 and Burley 21. The plant is pyramidal in shape and the leaves are closely spaced on the stalk. It grows to 5-6 feet in height. Its lower growing plant form gives it good wind resistance and is more resistant to blow down than many taller Burleys. The leaves turn a golden yellow when ripe and ripen well ahead of blooming at around 60 days. Blooms do not appear until 80-85 days. It has excellent curability both primed or stalk hung. |
