Semois is a rich, pure leaf burley tobacco that was developed in Belgium in the Ardennes valley along the Semois river. It first originated in the 1870's to 1880's. By the early 20th century it had become widely popular. Highly reminiscent of smoking a cigar, but in a pipe it is a fascinating tobacco that has been highly regarded in Europe for well over 100 years. Long the secret of the Ardennes' misty valleys, Semois remained unheard of to most outside Belgium until a writer for the New York Times received some as a gift, leading in turn to an article on this distinctive regional leaf. The flavor is descried as being like a cigars but with a very floral taste, along with deep earthy flavors due to the low sugar content of the leaf.
