Jaffna originated in British Ceylon, now known as Sri Lanka, and was imported into the US in the 1930's. It has the highest nicotine content of any Bright Leaf tobacco we have grown at 6.15%. Jaffna grows to over 6' in height with large leaves averaging 18" wide and up to 30" long. The plants average 20 leaves per plant to the crows foot with yields of 4-5 oz of dried leaf per plant. It matures in only 55-60 days. The dark colored leaves lighten in color and turn slightly yellow as they ripen. Jaffna has a classic Virginian type leaf shape and was probably developed from the original Orinoco's. USDA PI 113985 |
